A Hunter's Story

Rand 25 Man

by Xanther on Mar.09, 2010, under Hunter, World of Warcraft

So I generally don’t raid 25 mans a whole lot. From having done it many times before, I’ve discovered a few things. First, I don’t want to organize one – not really worth being the one who has to deal with the idiots, the impatients, etc. Yes, the loot is better, but spread across more people, so taking probability of receiving gear into account, generally not really worth it. And lastly, and most important, they’re a LOT easier than 10 mans. However, from time to time I do run them because they can be fun.

Dispute me if you want, but as someone who does 10 mans regularly with skilled players, and who does 25 mans periodically… 25 mans are easy in comparison. Especially when you can PuG a successful 25 man without much trouble and yet coordinated 10 mans are tough to get through. Even when the average gear level is about the same. How to explain my position and how I come at this viewpoint… Hmm… One of the bars near us, we had a bartender who played WoW and did 25 man raids while bartending. Why? Because he could get up during the raid (during a boss fight or trash fights) and give us beer, and the group would still succeed no problem. Aka, his groups could pull the weight without trouble when a member or two were NOT EVEN THERE. So there’s a reason – in 25 mans you can have a player or two not there (run as 22 to 24 without trouble) while in 10 mans if you lose 1 player (9 man) you’re pretty seriously gimped. It’s a scale thing, but if you lose 10% of the players in 25’s, it’s not as detrimental as in 10’s, from my exp.

Another reason is that a few good people can carry the rest. In a 10, if you have a good tank and good healers… You still need good dps to get through the fights, or else they take forever and even good healers run out of mana on boss fights, even if the tanks are doing perfect jobs of keeping all the mobs on them. But in a 25 man? If you have a good tank, good healer or two, and decent dps or two? They can carry the group real well. Even for the bosses that require situational awareness – let the idiots die, then carry on. The fight’ll take a little longer, but it’ll still go down, lol.

I say this from experience, but you are free to disagree. Especially if you’re uber geared and a 1337 player who takes no crap from someone who doesn’t do 25 mans every day… But if you sit and think about it for a minute? You might agree. Not that this is anything new, considering I felt the same thing back in BC too.

But anyway, I digress. Last night was actually my first GDKP run, so I was curious how it worked. So I’ll share, in case anyone else is wondering. In our group, the Loot Master had an addon that made it easier. It was, quite simply, an auction. LM would post the item in chat with a minimum bid and with a 5 sec countdown. People would /raid a number (3600, for example) and LM would call it the high bid and then countdown. Whoever posted the highest when the countdown hit 0 won. LM would then do the next item. If you won, you went to LM and traded them the amount. When all items were done, the addon did the math to add it up & divide by # of players, then ask everyone to trade LM for their cut.

So the cool thing is that I actually won a drop. Deathbringer Saurfang dropped 3 pieces worth rolling on (worth rolling on for anyone in the raid I mean, not just Hunters). One went for 10,000g. Another for 6k. And the Protector’s Mark of Sanctification? 2,750. Add in that the split shares were 750g a piece, and I only dropped 2k on my mark. Pretty darn awesome! Half the raid was amazed/commenting/complaining that that’s the cheapest they’ve seen a mark go for, lol. Guess I was just lucky we had no warriors or shaman, and just like 4 hunters who haven’t yet figured out how to play the AH. Well, that and that none of them went over 3k which I think was going to be my limit, lol.

So now comes my only problem… I need more frost badges so I can upgrade a piece of gear. I mean, I could upgrade a piece now since I have enough badges, but the bad part is it wouldn’t be a piece I want to upgrade. My shoulders are 251 off an ICC-10 drop (Gunship), for example. So I really want to upgrade a 232 like my pants, except there’s another upgrade or two out there for them I could get instead. But I think what I’ll actually go for, is my chest. I already broke my 4 piece set bonus because I deemed the gear better than the bonus (or at least roughly equivalent, knowing I’d upgrade at some point). So this would get me on the road towards a second 2 piece bonus. Plus the new chest will be teh awesome! LOL. I just need more badges since it’ll take 95 to get the one to upgrade

But anyway, it really did just reinforce my belief, again, that 25 man’s are easier. Especially when a 25 man pug can down Saurfang in 1 shot easily when our coordinated 10 man struggled to take him down. I know, I /rant. I just occasionally (well, Lady X would probably say “often” instead of “occasionally” hehe) get tired of people who are loud mouthed about “I run 25’s so I’m better than you” and then they start quoting their DPS or some other number. And they always forget about how you do more dps in a 25 man because of the buffs and all. Giving your Heroic DPS numbers would be a better baseline, but people don’t want to give the lower number, lol. Of cource, Heroic Dungeon fights are different from Raid fights, so I guess it’s a no-win situation. Ok, I know I know… /rantdone, lol.

So thx to Z for asking if I wanted to join in on the 25 man ICC run! It was fun, easy, quick, and I got a drop!

Loremaster!!!

by Xanther on Mar.08, 2010, under General

Huzzah! Finally, after lots and lots of work, grinding rep to get quests and all… We have Loremaster! Gotta love the “PWN” right smack dab in the middle of the screen too! Lol. Lessons learned:

  1. Do Loremaster first, before The Insane or Bloodsail Buccanneers.
  2. After Loremaster, finish up Steemwheedle Cartel up to exalted
  3. Then do Bloodsail
  4. Then do the rest of the Insane.

Why do I suggest that order? Because already have Bloodsail at Revered, and Steemwheedle was at Hated. So we hit about 650/700 quests in Kalimdore and it became real hard to find the rest to finish up. Had to grind back Ratchet & Everlook to Neutral in order to get and finish the rest of the quests. And, since we want The Insane, we’ll have to continue grinding all of them up to Exalted. Of course, I can’t complain too much because… well… we’re completionists, so we’ll want them all at 999 Exalted anyway, but doing it in the above order would have been easier. But anyway, psyched! Now we just have all the other grinds left… Seriously going to be insane by the time we’re done…

Slow Stuffs

by Xanther on Mar.05, 2010, under World of Warcraft

Had a couple slower groups last night, when running for the Frost Badges. Didn’t mind too much, because it made it easier, but it also made me think about how fast we’re now running dungeons. Makes me think back to the days of doing a trash pull, getting mana back, doing a trash pull, etc. In some ways it makes me sad that the dungeon’s aren’t really challenging, that we can just crush through. But at the same time, there are new challenges – like how fast you can go, how large of a pull can the group handle, and so on.

But the other thing I realized is that WoW slowed down a LOT for us this week… Been working on Loremaster. Which, of course means we had to get back to grinding up Steamwheedle Cartel. We got it down to about 650/700 quests in Kalimdor before we hit a wall and couldn’t get any new quests. So here’s my tip for the day – do Loremaster before The Insane. And if you want to make it even easier, do Bloodsail, then Loremaster, then The Insane. But really the key is doing Bloodsail first, before you’ve burned all the quests that’ll give you rep w/ the Cartel. That way you only have to grind up to Neutral, and can quest a huge chunk. But yeah, regardless, grinding the quests & rep makes the game go slow. My tip for that, is to put on a movie, get a comfy chair instead of your computer chair, and put the alcohol w/in reach, lol. Ok fine, not too much alcohol, but a beer or two can make the grind go by quicker. Or maybe that’s just because I love beer, lol. But the comfy chair idea is really good. Lady X agrees ;)

Oh, and sry for not dropping in links. I’m at work (yes, on vacation and I’m at work at night… already stated I wasn’t too happy about a few things…) and not even at my desk, so no mouse, no power, and I have to monitor like 10 ppl. But oh well, c’est la vie! And ’sides, home soon, WoW soon, and Loremaster soon!!!

Aotona!

by Xanther on Mar.04, 2010, under World of Warcraft

Woohoo! I have a new pet! Was doing the blood fishing quest down in Borean Tundra and Lady X suggested I fly up and check for Loque. So I’m flying around, NPC Scan goes off. I figure it’s just some hunter with a tamed Loque out, and then I realize it’s Aotona. So I look around, figuring no one really has him as a pet, and sure enough, just northeast of the Frenzyheart area, he’s flying around. I quickly tag him, to make sure he’s mine, and start taming. Of course an extra mob agros, so I had to kill it first, and Aotona did his nice little wing buffet thingy to make me go flying, but after losing a few extra heartbeats, he was mine!!! Now named Vree, he’s probably the prettiest pet I have. Now I just need a Hyacinth Macaw to tag along with us, lol.

So long post today, since I’m on vaca this week and Lady X is afk. Anyway, a good addon to get if you use the auction house is Postal. I won’t tell you what it is I’ve been making & selling so you won’t fight me for it and bring the price down, but the short version is that I sell 40+ of this item each day pretty much. So previously I had to open each piece, collect the gold, open the next, etc. But at the suggestion of a guildie, I downloaded it and it is SO nice! Just click “open all” and it collects all your gold for you. Quick couple tweaks to the settings, and you can make it only open the AH mail, leave X number of slots open in your bags, and so on. Postal. Good addon.

So final part I was going to talk about, are jerks. Two guys actually, that were such jerks I’ll even call them out by name. First is Bodie-Antonidas. I was helping a guildie out by running a low level dungeon with her. Took my 80 tank so we’d get in the dungeon quick, and could fly through it pretty fast. Of course, at the same time I was also on my main & running Lady X’s main to grind some rep back with Booty Bay & the other 3. But it’s a lowbie dungeon, so pretty easy to have a divided attention. When we get to the end and down Anub’Arak, and he says “Scrub-ass pally that just had a 74 out damage you”.

Now yes, that was true on that one fight. Considering it’s mana intensive for the tank, I’m a TANK and don’t do much dmg, and I was tri-boxing all at the same time, yes, a 74 out damaged me. I averaged 931 dps and he had 1120. Wow, big gap. Of course, he didn’t bother to check overall damage where he would have seen I did 38.3% of the damage in the dungeon and he only did 29.7%. But tbh, that’s hardly the point. What a jerk! Why would you say something like that? An 80 just ran you through a dungeon and made it easy for you. Just helped you out. Even if you are an idiot and think you did more dmg than him/her, why would you say something like that and ditch immediately after? The guy was being nice and running you through – be nice back! UGH. I hate jerks.

So jerk #2, Maglin-Garrosh. Running HoR, and notice the tank is taking forever, just standing at the entrance. After a few minutes, we ask if the tank is ready, and she replies “Sorry, my guildies and I were busy laughing at the shammy” and then starts the dungeon. We’re all like what? So my wife says “At me?” since she was on her shaman. Tank says yes, “Your gear and weapons are hilariously bad”.

Isn’t that just plain mean? I mean, seriously, if that’s true do you really have to say it? Jerk! Especially considering that she’s wearing all 200+ epic gear. Like, has 232, and 245 gear even. So she’s not poorly geared, that tank was just being a jerk. How mean is that?!?! I mean, if someone’s gear was really bad, then talk to them on the side or something. Don’t just be like “my guildies and I were too busy laughing at you to start the dungeon”. Especially when it’s not true! UGH, I hate jerks. So we figured rather than run with the jerks, I said “Well, that comment just lost you your healer too” and we both dropped group. Not our fault that the tank waited 5 minutes to start the dungeon, and then after starting it proceeded to insult one of the DPS, who happens to be in the same guild as the healer. I wonder how many waves they got through before wiping, but however many it was, I hope Bliz gave them double repair costs just for being jerks.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot the very helpful tip I wanted to get up on the web! If you are thinking about the insane title, or the bloodsail one, when you want to get back rep with Ratchet, Booty Bay, etc… Yeah, go to the place just south of Ratchet. Kill the Southsea guys. If you have some way of not dieing when jumping off cliffs, it’s fast, easy, and awesome. Start in the south next to Northwatch Hold. If you run north along the coast, then up the hill, then south, then jump off the cliff and start over, it’ll go real fast. The respawn timers are short and you’ll be able to go nonstop, or until you get hungry/thirsty and need to make a trip to the kitchen, lol. It does not hurt your Bloodsail rep, so the only downside is that it’s boring. But then, so is every grind, but it’s a lot better than the Evacuee’s in Grizzly Hills. Zomg, we killed those for ages, but their spawn timer, while quick, is not very quick. Plus that little ship gets real boring real quick. Great way to level Vree though! Lol. Got him up to 80 by grinding rep there. But seriously – the Barrens is really the place to go. I think there’s another place or two similar, but those level 13 mobs go down real quick, lol.

Ok, back to gaming and… grinding… :( Oh well, better than work! Lol.

Some ppl can’t see

by Xanther on Feb.26, 2010, under Real Life

Ok, side note that I’m annoyed at senior management (IRL) for being idiots. They just don’t see how dumb they actually are. The tough part is that I’m going to have to be the one to bring it to their attention, for better or worse. Yay. They see what they’re doing about as well as I see whatever the hell it is in this image:

I think it’s an 86? Maybe? No clue if that’s even close, tbh. Just like them – no clue if they’re even close to the right decisions. Some days I wish I could bring my hunter into RL and have him clean a few things up…

/rant over (for now).

Snow!

by Xanther on Feb.25, 2010, under Real Life

Yeah, lots and lots of it… Finally!!! They say we officially got 17.5″ already and have another 6″ or so on the way, but I think it’s more accurate to say we got closer to 24″ with more coming soon. Except it’s all the wet heavy stuff, which makes power flicker, internet unstable (who would want a computer on with the power surges anyway?) which also means no WoW. :( Well, since I haven’t had time anyway with working from 0800 to 1900 or 2100, skipping lunches and dinners… Yeah, cannot wait until next week when I’m on vaca! Of course, that means it’s time to get everything else done that I haven’t had time for too. Ugh. Well, maybe I’ll be able to hop back on at some point!
